How to Host a Telegram Bot 24/7 with Python
A step-by-step deployment checklist for keeping a Telegram bot online after your computer shuts down.
A Telegram bot that works on your laptop stops when the Python process exits or the laptop sleeps. To keep it available all day, run the process on a server or managed Python host. Before deploying, decide whether your library uses polling or webhooks; the startup and networking requirements differ.
Prepare the project
Put your main Python file and requirements.txt in one project folder. Pin major dependency versions so a future package update does not unexpectedly break startup. Read the bot token from an environment variable and keep it out of Git, ZIP archives and screenshots.
import os
token = os.environ["TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN"]
For polling bots, launch one process with a long-running polling loop. Do not run the same token in multiple polling processes unless your framework explicitly supports it. Duplicate polling instances can compete for updates and make messages appear unreliable.
Deploy and verify
Upload the project, add the token in the host's secret or environment-variable setting, select the right entry file, and start the bot. Read the startup log: dependency installation should finish and the bot should enter its polling loop without a traceback. Then send a private test message from Telegram and confirm the response. Restart the bot from the dashboard and test again.
When to use webhooks
Webhooks are useful when you already have an HTTPS endpoint and want Telegram to push updates to it. The endpoint needs a valid public URL and a running web server. Polling is simpler for many background bots because it does not require an inbound HTTP route. Pick one mode at a time; mixing both often creates confusing delivery failures.
For PyHost, check the plan's resource and network limits and use live logs to diagnose the first run. Never publish the token in a support request; revoke it through BotFather if it leaks.
