Why Your Python Bot Keeps Stopping and How to Fix It

Use logs and a small repeatable test to find the actual reason a bot stops.

An automatic restart can bring a Python bot back online after a crash, but it cannot fix the underlying error. Repeated restarts may hide a missing secret, failed import, exhausted memory limit or external API problem. The fastest route is to inspect the first traceback around the restart time.

Separate startup failures from runtime failures

If the bot exits immediately, check the entry-file path, Python version, requirements installation and required environment variables. A ModuleNotFoundError points to a dependency issue; a KeyError for a token usually means the secret was not configured. If it runs for hours and then stops, inspect API timeouts, unhandled exceptions, memory use and any scheduled task that runs around the failure.

Reproduce with the same inputs

Record the timestamp, last successful action and first error. Test the same command or event in a staging bot where possible. Add targeted logging around the failing operation, but never print tokens or personal user data. Catch errors at an external API boundary with a retry policy; do not wrap the entire bot in an exception handler that silently discards every failure.

Check resource limits

An out-of-memory kill may leave no Python traceback. Compare the host's memory graph with the plan limit, then look for large caches, downloaded files, too many simultaneous tasks or unbounded lists. If the bot has grown, right-size the plan after measuring actual usage.

Confirm the fix

Redeploy, watch startup, trigger the failing action and keep the bot running through the period when it previously stopped. A green status immediately after restart is not proof of recovery. Keep a short incident note so the same failure is easier to recognize next time.
