Hosting Pyrogram and Telethon: Sessions, Storage and Restarts

Session files are the detail that makes user-client hosting different from a simple Telegram bot.

Pyrogram and Telethon can run Telegram clients as long-lived Python processes. Unlike a basic bot-token example, these projects may hold authenticated session data. Treat a session file or session string like a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to act as that account.

Plan where the session lives

Determine whether your host preserves a writable application directory across restarts and redeploys. If the directory is ephemeral, a file-based session may disappear and require authentication again. A session string can avoid file persistence, but it is still sensitive and belongs in a secret store. Never paste either form into a public repository or support screenshot.

Install matching dependencies

List Pyrogram or Telethon in requirements.txt and test with the host's Python version. Some optional performance packages include compiled code; check whether your hosting environment supports them before making them mandatory. Start with the smallest working dependency set.

Watch for connection and rate-limit issues

Network drops, Telegram flood waits and authentication errors need different responses. Read the specific exception and respect a server-provided wait period rather than reconnecting in a tight loop. A restart policy is useful for unexpected exits, but repeated login attempts can worsen account restrictions.

Test a restart safely

Launch the client, complete the initial login through a secure method, then restart the process. Confirm that the same session resumes without prompting for a code and that the intended task still works. Back up important session state securely. For user accounts, understand Telegram's rules and keep automation within the permissions of the account and service.
